Zoomlion Kenya Scales Up Dandora Dumpsite Restoration as Safisha Kanairo Campaign Targets Waste-to-Value<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NAIROBI, August 26, 2026 \u2014 Zoomlion Kenya has intensified efforts to transform Nairobi\u2019s waste management landscape through the second edition of the Safisha Kanairo campaign, combining large-scale garbage evacuation, Dandora dumpsite restoration, community environmental initiatives and corporate social responsibility activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign, implemented in partnership with the Nairobi City County Government, is targeting accumulated and legacy waste in identified areas across the city\u2019s 17 sub-counties while laying the groundwork for a shift from conventional waste disposal to recycling and waste-to-value solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Dandora dumpsite, Zoomlion has accelerated engineering works involving waste compaction, re-engineering and capping as part of efforts to restore the sprawling site and reduce its impact on neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has established an on-site container office overlooking the dumpsite to enable engineers and operations managers to monitor the restoration works and provide continuous project oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoomlion says intensive compaction has already helped reduce foul odours that have affected residents living around the dumpsite, with the broader objective being an ecological transformation of the site within two years under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Nairobi County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign has also focused on areas affected by illegal dumping and accumulated waste. At Korogocho Market, waste evacuation has been ongoing as authorities and the private sector seek to improve sanitation and reclaim public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruaraka Sub-County Environment Officer Evans Ochieng said the partnership had contributed to the closure of five illegal dumping sites in the area, helping address persistent sanitation challenges.Market traders have also welcomed the intervention, saying more regular waste collection has improved the trading environment and helped attract customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoomlion Kenya Operations Manager Laud Mike Tagoe said the initiative is designed not only to clean Nairobi but also to create a sustainable economic value chain around waste through recycling and value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company plans to introduce skip containers, roll-on\/roll-off containers and transfer stations at cleared sites to prevent fresh dumping and sustain the gains made through the cleanup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major component of the waste-to-value strategy is the planned Zoomlion waste recycling and value-addition facility in Ruai. Once operational, the facility is expected to sort collected waste, process organic material into compost and fertiliser, and convert plastic waste into pellets for manufacturing products such as waste bins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approach is intended to reduce the volume of waste ending up at dumpsites while creating employment and affordable agricultural inputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CSR Intervention at Wangu Primary SchoolAs part of the campaign, Zoomlion Kenya and a delegation from the company’s Ghana headquarters also visited Wangu Comprehensive Primary School, which is located next to the Dandora dumpsite.The delegation, led by Zoomlion Kenya Head of Communication Daisy Chelangat, was received by Headteacher Wachira Kagunya, who briefed the team on the challenges facing the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school has more than 5,800 pupils and 70 teachers, including 44 hearing-impaired learners enrolled in a specialised unit.Student leaders raised concerns over exposure to dumpsite fumes, the collapse of sections of the school’s security wall and inadequate water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoomlion responded by distributing scholastic materials to pupils and committing to continued collaboration with the school in areas including tree planting, environmental education and support for perimeter security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intervention is part of the company’s broader community engagement strategy aimed at protecting institutions and communities living around waste disposal sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign draws from the Jospong Group’s experience in Ghana, where its environmental operations have included the restoration and capping of historical landfills and the conversion of former waste sites into green and recreational spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning Waste into an Economic Resource Zoomlion says Safisha Kanairo is ultimately aimed at changing how Nairobi and other Kenyan cities view waste \u2014 from an environmental burden to a resource capable of generating jobs, agricultural inputs and manufactured products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company says its operations have created more than 5,000 direct and indirect green jobs, providing opportunities for youth and waste pickers in recycling, material recovery and organic waste processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoomlion is also calling on county governments across Kenya to embrace PPPs as a way of mobilising private capital, technical expertise and modern waste-management technologies to address the country’s growing waste challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second edition of Safisha Kanairo therefore seeks to go beyond removing garbage from streets and illegal dumpsites, by establishing systems that can prevent waste from returning while creating economic opportunities from materials previously regarded as worthless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For communities surrounding Dandora and Korogocho, the immediate priority remains a cleaner and safer environment. For Zoomlion and its partners, however, the longer-term ambition is to demonstrate that Nairobi’s waste can become a foundation for a circular economy built around recycling, employment and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
