JOOTRH Ag CEO Joshua Clinton Okise Named CEO of the Year at Kenya Leadership Awards 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Joshua Clinton Okise has been recognised as the CEO of the Year at the Kenya Leadership Awards 2026, in recognition of his leadership, strategic direction, innovation and contribution to institutional transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Okise received the prestigious award today, 23 September 2026, during a ceremony at Hyatt Regency Nairobi Westlands, bringing together industry leaders, senior professionals, academicians and other distinguished personalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kenya Leadership Awards, endorsed by The Pride and Excellence Awards, recognise individuals and organisations demonstrating outstanding performance, innovation and impact across different sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the organisers, Dr Okise was selected following an independent evaluation by the awards jury. The assessment considered strategic leadership and vision, business growth and operational excellence, innovation and impact, corporate governance and ethical practices, and contribution to society and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recognition comes as Dr Okise marks about 395 days at the helm of JOOTRH, a period that has coincided with one of the most significant transformation phases in the history of the institution.
Under his leadership, the hospital has undertaken major institutional, financial, clinical, technological and infrastructure reforms as it transitions into a Level 6A National Teaching and Referral Hospital and a national parastatal under the national government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most notable areas of transformation has been financial sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing from his academic and professional background in finance, Dr Okise has applied financial management principles and data-driven systems to strengthen revenue collection, optimise billing and address financial leakages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result has been a dramatic increase in the hospital’s revenue, rising from approximately KSh290 million, including Exchequer support, to about KSh1.5 billion in FY 2025\/26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The financial turnaround has positioned JOOTRH to strengthen its capacity to provide specialised healthcare services while investing in infrastructure, equipment, technology and human resources.
The achievement also reflects Dr Okise’s academic journey in finance. His doctoral research focused on financial information systems and county revenue collection, providing a foundation for applying academic knowledge to real-world institutional challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The financial transformation has been accompanied by significant progress in clinical services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the past year, JOOTRH has recorded major milestones in specialised surgery, including the successful performance of open-heart surgery in Kisumu, introduction of minimally invasive surgery through Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), establishment of a cardiothoracic and vascular surgery unit and expansion of neurosurgery, spinal surgery and paediatric neurosurgery.
The hospital has also expanded advanced maxillofacial, ENT, colorectal and gynaecological procedures, while introducing intraoperative imprint cytology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In sickle cell and haematology services, JOOTRH has introduced automated Red Blood Cell Exchange (RBCx) and expanded apheresis services. The Victoria Annex has also been transformed into a specialised Sickle Cell and Haematology Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital’s scorecard further records a reduction in mortality among children enrolled in its sickle cell programme to 2.2 per cent, alongside intensified community screening and awareness activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
