Youth leader Abdiweli Muse supports Somalia President and calls for youth to participate in the upcoming elections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A prominent Somali youth leader on Tuesday declared full support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud\u2019s democratic vision, urging young people across the nation to actively participate in the country’s upcoming elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engr. Abdiweli Ali Musse, Director of the Somali Youth Leadership and Initiatives Center, stated that young Somalis are ready to step forward and exercise their democratic rights under a direct electoral framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voicing strong endorsement for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud\u2019s initiative to transition Somalia to a universal suffrage model, Musse called on the youth demographic which represents over 70 percent of the national population to embrace the shift and make their voices heard at the ballot box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musse called for a one person, one Vote model of democracy , stressing that the focus must remain on civic readiness, youth empowerment, and national unity rather than political division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somalia\u2019s electoral history has undergone significant shifts since independence in 1960. Following a period of parliamentary democracy, the nation held its last universal suffrage multi-party parliamentary election in March 1969. However, a military coup in October 1969 halted constitutional democratic processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following decades of conflict and state collapse starting in 1991, Somalia gradually established a provisional political structure through clan-based consensus. Under the traditional “4.5 clan model” adopted in the 2000s, political representation was divided among the country’s major clan families.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under this indirect system, clan elders selected delegates who then elected members of Parliament, who in turn voted to elect the Federal President in indirect parliamentary votes such as those conducted in 2012, 2017, and most recently in May 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musse noted that after more than five decades without universal suffrage, an entire generation of Somalis has grown up without ever casting a direct ballot in a national election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From 1969 to today, a generation that has never voted is waiting,” Musse emphasized, asserting that today’s youth possess the education, digital literacy, and determination required to actively participate in direct democratic elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musse urged political actors, civil society, and international partners to back the federal government’s electoral transition agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reaffirmed that moving away from indirect clan representation to a direct “one person, one vote” system will solidify democratic governance, strengthen public institutions, and position young people at the center of Somalia’s political and economic future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
