Machua Waithaka’s Warm Tribute to the Legends of Kenyan Football

Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka has once again offered a glimpse of the personable and gracious side of his leadership after hosting two celebrated figures in Kenya’s football history at Parliament.

Waithaka welcomed former football stars Bobby Ogola and Tobias “Jua Kali” Ocholla, describing their contribution to Kenyan football as a legacy that deserves to be celebrated, remembered and preserved for generations.

The occasion was more than a meeting between a legislator and sporting personalities. It was an opportunity for Waithaka to honour two men whose careers helped shape some of the most memorable chapters in the country’s football history.

For a leader known for his warm engagement with people, the decision to open the doors of Parliament to the two legends demonstrated an appreciation for the contribution made by sportsmen to the country.

Ogola remains remembered as one of Kenya’s outstanding defenders and was part of the historic Gor Mahia team that won the 1987 African Cup Winners’ Cup after defeating Tunisia’s Espérance.

That same year, he represented Harambee Stars at the All-Africa Games, where Kenya reached the final before narrowly losing 1-0 to Egypt.

Ocholla, popularly known as “Jua Kali”, is similarly remembered as part of a generation that gave Kenyan football fans unforgettable moments and helped build the sporting culture enjoyed by subsequent generations.

For Waithaka, spending time with the two former players was therefore an opportunity to acknowledge their service to the nation.

His gesture also reflected a quality that increasingly defines his public engagements — an ability to make people feel appreciated.

Rather than treating the legends simply as former footballers, Waithaka recognised them as custodians of an important part of Kenya’s sporting heritage.

That appreciation was evident when the delegation later paid a courtesy call on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss sports and reminisce about the golden moments of Kenyan football.

Such moments are valuable because sporting history is not preserved only in records and trophies. It is also preserved through conversations, memories and the willingness of present generations to honour those who came before them.

Waithaka’s approach demonstrates that leadership can have a human face.

There is something particularly admirable about a public leader who takes time to listen to people, acknowledge their achievements and give them the dignity they deserve.

His interaction with Ogola and Ocholla was warm, respectful and rooted in genuine appreciation.

It also showed that Waithaka understands the importance of celebrating Kenyans who have contributed to the country’s story in different fields.

Football occupies a special place in Kenya’s national identity. For millions of fans, the memories created by past generations of players remain deeply cherished.

By bringing two of those personalities to Parliament, Waithaka helped connect the country’s institutional present with its sporting past.

It was also a reminder that Parliament is not only a place for legislation and debate. It can be a place where the country recognises its heroes, celebrates its heritage and creates space for meaningful conversations.

Waithaka’s warm personality was particularly evident in the manner in which he described the encounter.

There was no sense of political grandstanding. Instead, the emphasis was on gratitude and respect for two men who had given their youth and talent to Kenyan football.

That humility is an important quality in public service.

People remember leaders not only for what they say in formal settings but also for how they treat others.

In welcoming the football legends, Waithaka showed the courtesy and generosity that make public engagement more meaningful.

His gesture was especially significant for former sportsmen whose contributions can sometimes fade from public memory once their playing careers are over.

Waithaka effectively reminded Kenyans that sporting heroes deserve recognition long after they leave the pitch.

The meeting also created an opportunity to revisit the “good old days” of Kenyan football — an era that continues to inspire passionate conversations among fans.

For the older generation, such memories evoke the excitement of packed stadiums and legendary players. For younger Kenyans, they provide an opportunity to learn about the personalities who laid the foundations of the country’s football tradition.

Waithaka’s willingness to facilitate that conversation reflects an inclusive understanding of leadership.

He appears comfortable engaging with people from different generations and backgrounds, and his interaction with the two legends provided a particularly human example of that quality.

His message was ultimately simple: achievements made in service of the nation should never be forgotten.

The legacy of Ogola and Ocholla belongs not only to them but to Kenyan football and to the generations that watched them play.

Their stories form part of the country’s sporting heritage, and celebrating them helps ensure that the sacrifices, talent and dedication of past players remain alive in the national memory.

For Waithaka, therefore, the meeting was not merely an afternoon spent with two former footballers.

It was an act of appreciation.

It was an expression of respect.

And it was a demonstration of the warmth that has become an important feature of his public personality.

The Kiambu Town MP showed that one does not need a grand ceremony to honour a national hero. Sometimes, a simple invitation, a respectful conversation and the opportunity to say “thank you” can mean just as much.

His gesture towards Ogola and Ocholla captures the qualities of a leader who values people, remembers contributions and is willing to celebrate others.

At a time when public discourse can often become dominated by politics and controversy, Waithaka’s engagement offered something refreshingly different — recognition, friendship and appreciation.

And perhaps that is what makes the encounter particularly memorable.

Two football legends walked into Parliament carrying decades of memories.

They left having been reminded that their contribution to Kenya’s football story still matters.

And Waithaka demonstrated, in his own quiet way, that good leadership is also about honouring people, preserving memories and making others feel valued.

For Kenyan football, the memories of the 1980s remain precious.

For Bobby Ogola and Tobias “Jua Kali” Ocholla, the invitation to Parliament was a well-deserved moment of recognition.

And for Machua Waithaka, it was another opportunity to demonstrate a quality that makes leadership more relatable: a genuine appreciation for people and the contributions they have made to the nation. ⚽🇰🇪🏆 :::
