Kenya gets into hate and political intolerance, ethnic division, and it’s important that we rally all Kenyans, the citizens, all the stakeholders, so that we work collectively towards preserving our country to remain standing during and after the election,” Okatch said.

She noted that the Nairobi engagement was part of the Commission’s wider effort to take the roadmap directly to communities and institutions, allowing stakeholders to understand emerging risks and identify practical measures they can undertake to prevent conflict.

According to Okatch, lack of trust, political intolerance and divisive politics are among the vulnerabilities that could threaten peaceful elections if they are not addressed early.

She also emphasised the importance of involving young people in peace-building initiatives, noting their significant role in communities and the political process.

“We want to encourage all the stakeholders working with youth to ensure that they are involved and they hear their voices,” she said.

Okatch urged young people to become ambassadors of peace rather than being manipulated or recruited into activities that could result in violence.

The Commission is also concerned about the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping political discourse. Hate speech, misinformation, disinformation and inflammatory content can spread rapidly online, increasing tensions and deepening divisions.

The Nairobi forum therefore provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss peace messaging, prevention of hate speech and incitement, violent extremism, and the strengthening of community-level early warning and early response systems.

NCIC Commissioner Jackson Swadi Kedogo, who officially opened the engagement, said the Commission’s responsibility goes beyond responding to violence after it occurs and emphasised the importance of prevention.

He said the roadmap was being taken to stakeholders across the country so that peace-building becomes a shared responsibility rather than the responsibility of NCIC and government institutions alone.

Political parties and political actors were identified as particularly important partners in ensuring peaceful elections. The Commission is expected to engage political parties further on responsible political conduct and commitments towards peaceful competition.

Representatives from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties also emphasised the need for political competition to be based on issues, policies and ideas rather than hate, intimidation or exclusion.

The Nairobi engagement is part of NCIC’s broader nationwide dissemination of the violence-free elections roadmap. Similar engagements have been undertaken in other counties, with further stakeholder consultations expected as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

The Commission, working with partners including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), is seeking to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, political actors, communities, civil society, religious organisations, the media and young people.

The Nairobi forum comes at a critical period as Kenya begins preparations for the 2027 elections. NCIC maintains that early intervention, responsible leadership, inclusive dialogue and coordinated community action will be critical in ensuring that political competition does not degenerate into violence.

As Kenya approaches the next General Election, the Commission is calling on every stakeholder to play a role in protecting the country’s peace, cohesion and democratic gains.

Commissioner Jackson Swadi Kedogo, National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) NCIC Takes Violence-Free 2027 Elections…

[17

post-10701","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics
["GET
