Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, has hailed the construction of the Talanta Raila Odinga International Stadium as a major milestone in Kenya\u2019s ambition to become a leading destination for sports tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miano said the ultra-modern facility would strengthen Kenya\u2019s international profile by attracting major sporting events, international football clubs, global media and thousands of sports tourists, while complementing the country\u2019s traditional wildlife and coastal tourism attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CS applauded President William Ruto for delivering the ambitious infrastructure project, describing the stadium as a strategic investment that would expand Kenya\u2019s tourism offering and create new opportunities across the hospitality and service sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that the world-class venue would play a significant role in positioning Kenya as a preferred destination for international sporting competitions, particularly as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy providing a dedicated, elite arena ready to co-host AFCON 2027, this diversifies Kenya\u2019s iconic tourism profile far beyond traditional wildlife safaris,\u201d Miano said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stadium is expected to provide a major platform for sports tourism, bringing together sporting excellence, international exposure and economic opportunities for businesses that serve visiting fans and athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miano also highlighted plans for the stadium\u2019s grand opening on January 5, 2027, which is expected to feature a high-profile football match between European clubs FC Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural fixture is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase the facility to international audiences and reinforce Kenya\u2019s growing ambitions in sports tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the CS, the stadium\u2019s appeal extends beyond football, with its capacity to host major tournaments and international events expected to generate benefits across the wider tourism value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These include increased demand for hotel accommodation, restaurants, transport services, tour operators and other businesses that stand to benefit from the arrival of international visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facility is also expected to enhance Kenya\u2019s visibility in international sporting circles, creating opportunities to market the country as a destination where visitors can combine sporting experiences with wildlife safaris, coastal holidays and cultural tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miano said the development aligned with the government\u2019s efforts to diversify tourism products and attract new visitor segments, particularly sports enthusiasts who travel across borders to attend major competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya\u2019s established reputation as a destination for athletics and its rich sporting heritage provide a strong foundation for expanding into other areas of sports tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
