class="wp-block-heading">Kilifi Governor Pledges KSh251 Million Payment Plan to KEMSA, Citing Need for Reliable Medicine Supplies

Kilifi Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro has pledged to pay the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) KSh251 million in phases to reduce outstanding balances and strengthen the supply of health products and technologies to health facilities across the county.

The commitment underscores the importance of KEMSA’s strategic role in Kenya’s healthcare system and the value of its leadership under Chief Executive Officer Dr Waqo Dulacha Ejersa in strengthening customer engagement, improving supply chain coordination and supporting the availability of essential medical commodities.

During a meeting with KEMSA Commercial Services Director Eliud Muriithi at the Governor’s Official Residence in Kilifi, Mung’aro committed to paying KSh51 million in October, a further KSh100 million in November and another KSh100 million by January.

The proposed payments are intended to reduce the county’s outstanding obligations to the national medical supplies agency and enable continued replenishment of stocks for distribution to health facilities.

Mung’aro emphasised that consistent payments were essential to maintaining a reliable supply of medicines and other health products, noting that county governments and national institutions must work together to protect patients’ access to healthcare.

“Our commitment must ultimately be to protecting life and ensuring that patients receive the care they need,” he said.

The governor’s pledge highlights the relationship between timely settlement of supplier obligations and the availability of essential health products in public facilities, where interruptions in supply can affect service delivery and patient care.

Under the leadership of Dr Waqo, KEMSA has continued engaging county governments and other healthcare stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, understand emerging needs and support more responsive supply arrangements.

The authority’s customer engagement approach is particularly important as counties seek to align their procurement requirements with the health needs of their populations while managing competing demands on limited resources.

Muriithi welcomed Kilifi County’s payment commitment, noting that the meeting formed part of KEMSA’s nationwide customer engagement programme.

The initiative seeks to help the authority understand evolving healthcare needs and tailor product listings to the specific requirements of counties and individual health facilities.

Through such engagements, KEMSA aims to strengthen coordination with customers, improve the responsiveness of its supply chain and support reliable access to essential health products and technologies.

The discussions also reflect the importance of aligning medical supplies with actual demand at facility level, ensuring that health institutions can access the commodities needed to provide services to patients.

Over the past four years, Kilifi County has paid KEMSA more than KSh483 million, demonstrating an established financial relationship between the county government and the national medical supplies agency.

The latest pledge is expected to build on that record by providing a phased approach to reducing outstanding balances while supporting the continued supply of medicines and other essential health commodities.

For Kilifi residents, reliable access to medicines remains a critical component of effective healthcare delivery, particularly in public facilities serving communities across the coastal county.

KEMSA plays a central role in procuring, storing and distributing health products and technologies to public healthcare institutions, making its financial and operational sustainability important to the functioning of the wider health system.

The authority’s leadership under Dr Waqo Dulacha Ejersa is therefore significant in fostering partnerships with county governments, promoting accountability in customer relations and supporting efforts to improve the availability of medical supplies.

The Kilifi engagement demonstrates how structured payment commitments and sustained dialogue between suppliers and county governments can help address financial obligations while keeping patients’ needs at the centre of healthcare planning.

As the county works towards fulfilling its pledge, timely implementation of the proposed payments will be key to translating the commitment into improved supply continuity and more dependable access to essential health products across Kilifi’s health facilities.

The partnership between KEMSA and Kilifi County highlights a shared responsibility between national and county institutions to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve supply chain reliability and ensure that patients receive the care they need.

Kilifi Governor Pledges KSh251 Million Payment
