It is a chance for parents to give their children an experience that could shape how they see, understand and appreciate their country.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano is challenging Kenyan parents to look at the long December holiday differently by using the extended school break to introduce their children to the wonders of their own country.

Her message is that the three-month holiday should not simply be about staying indoors or travelling to the village for family gatherings. It should also be a season of discovery, adventure and learning through travel.

Kenya has an extraordinary tourism heritage, yet many of its citizens, particularly young people, have had limited opportunities to experience the country’s remarkable attractions. From the wildlife-rich savannahs of Maasai Mara and Amboseli to the spectacular beaches of Diani, Watamu and Lamu, the country offers experiences that can turn an ordinary holiday into an unforgettable adventure.

There are also lesser-known destinations, cultural centres, historical sites, museums, conservancies and natural attractions waiting to be explored.

For Miano, introducing children to these destinations is about more than tourism. It is about nurturing a generation that understands the value of its heritage, appreciates its cultural diversity and takes pride in the natural treasures that make Kenya special.

Imagine a child seeing an elephant in its natural habitat for the first time, learning about the history of Fort Jesus, experiencing the beauty of Lake Nakuru or discovering the unique cultures of Northern Kenya. These are lessons that go beyond the classroom and create memories that remain long after schools reopen.

Parents should therefore consider making domestic travel part of their children’s holiday plans. The extended break offers sufficient time to explore different destinations without necessarily rushing through the experience.

Importantly, experiencing Magical Kenya should not be mistaken for an expensive undertaking. One does not need a luxurious holiday package or a huge travel budget to discover the country. With proper planning, families can identify affordable destinations, take day trips, visit attractions within their counties or explore places that are accessible by road.

The misconception that tourism is exclusively for the wealthy has, in many ways, limited the growth of domestic travel. Kenya has attractions for different income groups, and families should be encouraged to explore options that suit their budgets.

There is also a bigger economic picture. Every Kenyan family that chooses to travel locally contributes to the livelihoods of people working in hotels, restaurants, transport, tour operations and other tourism-related businesses. Local communities, particularly those around tourism destinations, stand to benefit when domestic travel becomes part of the national holiday culture.

For years, Kenya has marketed its tourism attractions to international visitors. While that remains important, Kenyans themselves must become the first ambassadors of their country’s tourism offering.

Miano’s appeal should therefore inspire a change in how families approach the December holidays. Rather than viewing the three-month break merely as time away from school, parents can transform it into an opportunity for exploration, education and family bonding.

Children deserve to know the country they call home, not just through photographs, textbooks and television documentaries, but through experiences.

The magic of Kenya is not reserved for international tourists. It belongs to every Kenyan child.

This December, parents should give their children more than a holiday. They should give them the opportunity to discover Magical Kenya.

Three months of holiday, a lifetime of memories: Miano wants children to discover Magical Kenya…

[26

post-11144","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-lifestyle
["GET
