As the world marks International Day of Education, Benter Opande, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Women Teachers Association, has emphasized the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing education systems. Speaking on the theme of this year\u2019s observance, \u201cAI and Education: Human Agency in an Automated World, and Learning for Lasting Peace,\u201d Opande underscored the need for educators and governments to embrace AI-driven solutions to equip learners with 21st-century skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe integration of AI into education is not just a luxury; it is a necessity,\u201d Opande stated. \u201cFor learners to thrive in an increasingly automated world, we must reimagine our teaching methodologies and leverage AI to improve both the delivery and experience of education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further highlighted that innovative educational models should prioritize addressing the plight of children who lack access to basic education, a call to action that aligns with global advocacy for equitable learning opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Bank\u2019s State of Global Learning Poverty report paints a grim picture, calling for urgent interventions to prioritize core skills such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional development, particularly in the foundational years of schooling. Opande believes AI can be a game-changer in addressing these challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne way to enhance the quality of education is by equipping teachers with technology such as tablets preloaded with lesson plans and guides,\u201d she said. \u201cThis approach not only streamlines lesson preparation but also allows teachers to focus more on engaging with students, ensuring consistent and effective delivery of lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI-powered tools can also transform the way assessments are conducted. By automating grading and providing instant feedback to students, technology creates an efficient and responsive learning environment that fosters continuous improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opande urged stakeholders in the education sector to champion the adoption of technology as a key driver of change. She noted that AI has the potential to empower teachers, enrich learning experiences, and bridge educational disparities. However, she emphasized the importance of ensuring human agency remains central to education, even as automation becomes more prevalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Day of Education is a timely reminder of the transformative power of education. By embracing AI and other innovative technologies, Opande believes Kenya can not only enhance its education system but also prepare its learners to navigate the complexities of an automated future while promoting peace and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAI is not here to replace teachers but to empower them. When used responsibly, it can be a powerful tool to bridge gaps, enhance equity, and create lasting change in education,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
