Bora Scholarship Programme and the Women in Tech Empowerment Programme

Macmillan Medical Training College on Friday unveiled the Afya Bora Scholarship Programme and the Women in Tech Empowerment Programme, saying the initiatives seek to bridge inequalities in access to education and employment opportunities.

Speaking during the launch, the college director said many young Kenyans are unable to pursue further education due to financial constraints despite possessing talent and ambition.

The institution said the Afya Bora Scholarship Programme will provide full and partial sponsorships to deserving students undertaking accredited medical and healthcare training courses. At the same time, the Women in Tech Empowerment Programme, launched in partnership with NIA Innovation and Technology Training College, will offer fully sponsored training for women aged between 18 and 40 years in areas such as programming, innovation and digital entrepreneurship.

The college noted that Kenya continues to face shortages of healthcare workers even as demand for medical services rises under the government’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.

The institution said private colleges are playing a critical role in training healthcare assistants, caregivers, emergency responders and community health workers needed in hospitals and communities across the country. The director also called on the government to expand Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) support to students enrolled in accredited private colleges and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.According to the college, limiting funding opportunities to public institutions locks out many deserving learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.“We believe talent should never be buried because of poverty,” the director said, adding that support for education should be based on need and potential rather than whether a student attends a public or private institution.

The institution further argued that women remain underrepresented in technology and innovation despite rapid global digital transformation. It said the Women in Tech programme seeks to equip women from ordinary Kenyan families with digital skills to compete in the future economy and participate in innovation-driven industries. The programmes are aligned with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on education, gender equality and decent work, the college said.

Macmillan Medical Training College unveils Afya Bora Scholarship Programme and the
