Transport Stakeholders Urged to Pursue Dialogue Over Rising Fuel Prices<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transport sector leaders have called for structured and balanced dialogue among investors, commuters and the government following the latest fuel price increase, warning against unilateral decisions that could burden ordinary Kenyans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chairman of the Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association, Elijah Nyagah, and General Secretary of the Matatu Workers Union, Maurice Odour, said the rising cost of fuel continues to pile pressure on the public transport industry, which is already grappling with high operating costs.Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, the two leaders urged all stakeholders to embrace consultations to cushion commuters while ensuring transport operators remain viable amid increasing economic strain.Mr Nyagah said fuel remains one of the biggest expenses for transport operators, noting that frequent price increases directly affect fares and the cost of doing business.\u201cWe are appealing for sober and balanced engagement between public transport investors, commuters and the government. Any decisions made must take into account the economic realities facing operators and the financial challenges confronting passengers,\u201d he said.He warned that without proper dialogue, transport operators could be forced to adjust fares, a move likely to increase the cost of living for many Kenyans who depend on public transport daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Odour echoed the sentiments, saying workers in the transport sector are increasingly feeling the effects of rising fuel costs, which he said have disrupted operations and reduced earnings for many drivers and conductors.\u201cThe public transport sector supports thousands of livelihoods. We need a practical solution that protects investors, safeguards workers and remains fair to commuters,\u201d he said.The two officials called on the government to engage stakeholders in developing long-term measures to stabilise fuel prices and protect the transport sector from recurring shocks.Their remarks come amid growing concern over the impact of rising fuel costs on household spending and business operations across the country, with transport operators facing mounting pressure to balance profitability and affordability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
