The rise of Leah Sopiato Sankaire in Kenya’s political leadership is a testament to resilience, grassroots mobilization, and unwavering commitment to the empowerment of women, girls, and marginalized communities. As the Woman Representative for Kajiado County\u2014County 034\u2014and the National Chairperson of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association, Sankaire has distinguished herself as a leader whose influence extends far beyond her county, shaping national conversations on gender equality, education, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since assuming office as Kajiado Woman Representative in 2022, Sankaire has consistently advocated for equitable development, ensuring that women, youth, and vulnerable groups remain at the centre of Kenya’s development agenda. Under her guidance, the association has rolled out its 2024\u20132027 Strategic Plan, focusing on enhancing women’s participation in legislation, oversight, and representation while strengthening the organisation’s ability to advocate for vulnerable and marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities. The strategy emphasizes partnerships, capacity building, and inclusive governance as pillars for achieving sustainable gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education remains one of Sankaire’s defining priorities. Understanding that education is the most effective equaliser, she has championed initiatives that support girls’ education while addressing barriers such as period poverty. Through KEWOPA, she has worked closely with the State Department for Gender to accelerate the implementation of the national free sanitary towels programme, ensuring that girls from disadvantaged backgrounds remain in school. The initiative complements broader efforts to reduce school absenteeism and improve learning outcomes among adolescent girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond menstrual health, Sankaire has consistently spoken against harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and teenage pregnancies. She has led nationwide mentorship programmes in schools, encouraging young people to make informed life choices while promoting reproductive health awareness. These mentorship sessions have also engaged boys and male community leaders, recognising that gender equality requires the participation of the entire society rather than women alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her commitment to grassroots empowerment is equally evident in Kajiado County, where she has supported numerous community-based initiatives targeting women and youth. Through bursary programmes, women’s empowerment forums, youth engagement activities, and advocacy for improved public services, Sankaire has sought to bridge the gap between national policy and local development. Her office has consistently promoted economic empowerment through skills development, entrepreneurship, and support for organised community groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a parliamentarian serving on the Departmental Committees on Lands, Tourism and Wildlife, as well as the Selection Committee, Sankaire has also contributed to debates affecting land governance, conservation, and sustainable tourism\u2014issues that are particularly significant for Kajiado County, whose economy depends heavily on livestock production, wildlife conservation, and tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
