As the Woman Representative for Kajiado County—County 034—and the National Chairperson of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association, Sankaire has distinguished herself as a leader whose influence extends far beyond her county, shaping national conversations on gender equality, education, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance.

Since assuming office as Kajiado Woman Representative in 2022, Sankaire has consistently advocated for equitable development, ensuring that women, youth, and vulnerable groups remain at the centre of Kenya’s development agenda. Her leadership style, rooted in community engagement and collaboration, has earned her recognition as one of the country’s emerging champions of transformative leadership. Before joining the National Assembly, she served in several leadership roles within the County Government of Kajiado, including Chief of Staff and Chief of Protocol, while earlier serving as a nominated Member of the County Assembly and founding a community-based organization dedicated to combating violence against women.

Her election as the fifth National Chairperson of KEWOPA in March 2023 marked a significant milestone not only in her political career but also in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen women’s representation in governance. The association brings together all women Members of Parliament from both the National Assembly and the Senate with the objective of promoting democracy, gender equality, and the protection of women’s rights. Under her stewardship, KEWOPA has intensified advocacy for constitutional reforms, women’s political participation, and gender-responsive legislation.

One of Sankaire’s most notable contributions has been her relentless push to create a more conducive political environment for women leaders. Recognising that many women continue to face violence, discrimination, and financial barriers in politics, she has spearheaded programmes aimed at strengthening women’s leadership capacities while encouraging more women to seek elective office. Through strategic partnerships with civil society organisations, development partners, and Parliament, KEWOPA has expanded mentorship initiatives, policy dialogues, and grassroots civic education to inspire the next generation of female leaders.

Her leadership has also strengthened KEWOPA’s institutional capacity. Under her guidance, the association has rolled out its 2024–2027 Strategic Plan, focusing on enhancing women’s participation in legislation, oversight, and representation while strengthening the organisation’s ability to advocate for vulnerable and marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities. The strategy emphasizes partnerships, capacity building, and inclusive governance as pillars for achieving sustainable gender equality.

Education remains one of Sankaire’s defining priorities. Understanding that education is the most effective equaliser, she has championed initiatives that support girls’ education while addressing barriers such as period poverty. Through KEWOPA, she has worked closely with the State Department for Gender to accelerate the implementation of the national free sanitary towels programme, ensuring that girls from disadvantaged backgrounds remain in school. The initiative complements broader efforts to reduce school absenteeism and improve learning outcomes among adolescent girls.

Beyond menstrual health, Sankaire has consistently spoken against harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and teenage pregnancies. She has led nationwide mentorship programmes in schools, encouraging young people to make informed life choices while promoting reproductive health awareness. These mentorship sessions have also engaged boys and male community leaders, recognising that gender equality requires the participation of the entire society rather than women alone.

Her commitment to grassroots empowerment is equally evident in Kajiado County, where she has supported numerous community-based initiatives targeting women and youth. Through bursary programmes, women’s empowerment forums, youth engagement activities, and advocacy for improved public services, Sankaire has sought to bridge the gap between national policy and local development. Her office has consistently promoted economic empowerment through skills development, entrepreneurship, and support for organised community groups.

As a parliamentarian serving on the Departmental Committees on Lands, Tourism and Wildlife, as well as the Selection Committee, Sankaire has also contributed to debates affecting land governance, conservation, and sustainable tourism—issues that are particularly significant for Kajiado County, whose economy depends heavily on livestock production, wildlife conservation, and tourism.

Another hallmark of her leadership has been her ability to build partnerships. Under her watch, KEWOPA has deepened collaboration with organisations such as UN Women, Oxfam Kenya, URAIA Trust, the Institute of Public Finance, and other development partners to advance gender justice, combat gender-based violence, promote disability inclusion, and strengthen women’s economic empowerment. These partnerships have enabled women legislators to better influence policy while amplifying the voices of communities across the country.

Sankaire has equally emerged as a strong advocate for peaceful political engagement and national cohesion. She has repeatedly called on women leaders to remain united despite political differences, arguing that collective action is essential in advancing gender equality and protecting democratic gains. Her emphasis on solidarity has helped strengthen KEWOPA as a bipartisan caucus capable of advancing legislative reforms that benefit all Kenyans regardless of political affiliation.

Her leadership philosophy reflects the belief that development is most sustainable when communities are empowered to participate in decision-making. Whether advocating for increased opportunities for girls, supporting vulnerable families, mentoring young leaders, or championing women’s representation in politics, Sankaire continues to demonstrate that effective leadership is measured by service rather than rhetoric.

Today, Leah Sopiato Sankaire stands among Kenya’s influential women leaders whose work continues to shape public policy and community development. As National Chairperson of KEWOPA and Woman Representative for Kajiado County, she has successfully combined legislative advocacy with grassroots engagement, ensuring that national policies translate into tangible improvements in people’s lives.

Her journey—from community development advocate and county leader to national legislator and head of Kenya’s premier women parliamentarians’ association—illustrates the transformative impact of visionary leadership anchored on inclusion, integrity, and service. As Kenya continues to pursue gender equality, social justice, and sustainable development, Leah Sopiato Sankaire’s contributions position her as a significant voice in advancing a more equitable and prosperous future for women, youth, and communities across the nation.

Leah Sopiato Sankaire: Championing Women’s Leadership and Inclusive Development in Kajiado and Kenya The rise…

[1

post-9707","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
