Matatu Owners Boss Calls for More Road Signs After Makueni Crash<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

President of the Matatu Owners Association Albert Karakacha has sent his heartfelt condolences to the families of victims of the tragic road accident along the Emali\u2013Ukia road in Makueni County, calling for urgent government action to improve road safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least seven people have been confirmed dead while more than 30 others were seriously injured after a 45-seater matatu lost control and rolled several times in Ikangavya Sub-location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vehicle was carrying family members and friends from Nthongoni in Kibwezi East who were travelling to the Maumba area in Ikangavya for a dowry ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The injured were rushed to various health facilities, including Makueni County Referral Hospital and Matiliku Sub-County Hospital, for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karakacha said the loss of lives was deeply painful and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing those injured a quick recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He, however, used the tragedy to make an urgent appeal to the government to strengthen road safety measures along the route, with particular emphasis on the installation of adequate and highly visible road signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Karakacha, motorists need clear and timely information about road conditions, sharp bends, junctions, speed limits, pedestrian crossings, dangerous sections and other potential hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said properly positioned warning and regulatory signs can give drivers sufficient time to slow down, adjust their speed and make safer decisions, particularly on busy roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe appeal to the government to urgently put more road signs along this road. Drivers need to be clearly warned about dangerous sections, bends, junctions and speed limits. Road signs are not decorations; they are critical safety tools that can save lives,\u201d Karakacha said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further called for the regular inspection and maintenance of existing road signs to ensure they remain visible to motorists, particularly at night and during poor weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karakacha said missing, damaged, poorly positioned or unclear signs can create unnecessary risks for motorists and passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also appealed for the road to be expanded and improved to accommodate increasing traffic, arguing that better infrastructure, combined with proper signage, would contribute significantly to reducing road crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Matatu Owners Association boss said the government should consider a comprehensive safety audit of the Emali\u2013Ukia road to identify accident-prone areas and install appropriate warning signs and other road safety infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged motorists to complement government efforts by observing speed limits, avoiding reckless driving and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karakacha said the public transport sector remains committed to working with government agencies and other stakeholders to promote safer roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that preventing road deaths requires more than reacting after accidents occur, saying authorities must invest in preventive measures that protect road users before tragedy strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery road user deserves to know what lies ahead. Clear road signs can warn a driver before danger is reached. We therefore need to prioritise signage and other safety measures before we lose more lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karakacha said the Makueni accident should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders to strengthen road safety interventions and ensure that roads are properly marked, clearly signposted and safe for motorists and passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reiterated his condolences to the affected families, saying the Matatu Owners Association stands with them during the difficult period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also urged those receiving treatment to remain hopeful and wished them a full recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
