Kenya’s Naivas steps up environmental conservation efforts on 36th anniversary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NAIROBI, Kenya \u2014 On an anniversary meant to celebrate 36 years of commercial growth, Kenya\u2019s largest supermarket chain turned its attention to something that grows much more slowly: trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Naivas marked 36 years in business with a tree-planting exercise at the Kilima Mbogo in Ol Donyo Sabuk National Reserve, bringing together employees, business partners and community members in an effort to support the restoration of Kenya\u2019s natural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naivasha in collaboration with KWS has set a target of 10,000 seedlings on right acres of land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The event reflected a broader shift among Kenyan businesses toward environmental programs that go beyond the traditional language of corporate philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Naivas, the anniversary offered an opportunity to connect the company\u2019s growth with the communities and landscapes in which it operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Andreas von Paleske, the company\u2019s chief executive, said the tree-planting exercise was intended as a practical expression of the retailer\u2019s environmental commitments.
\u201cAs we marked 36 years of serving communities, it was important for us to come together and take practical action for the environment,\u201d he said.

Kenya has in recent years stepped up tree-growing and landscape-restoration efforts as it confronts the effects of climate change and environmental degradation.
Naivas said its anniversary initiative was part of a wider environmental, social and governance program that includes efforts to incorporate sustainability into its operations and engagement with communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The company has expanded considerably since its establishment 36 years ago, becoming one of Kenya\u2019s most prominent supermarket chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its growth has also created links with thousands of farmers, manufacturers, suppliers and other businesses that depend on the country\u2019s retail sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


That expansion has brought a new question for companies like Naivas: how to reconcile continued commercial growth with growing expectations that businesses play a role in protecting the environment.
Tree planting has become one of the most visible responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Across Kenya, companies, schools, community organizations and government agencies have embraced tree-growing campaigns as part of efforts to increase forest cover, restore degraded land and strengthen resilience to a changing climate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But environmental advocates have also emphasized that planting trees is only one part of conservation; ensuring that trees survive and ecosystems are properly managed can be the more difficult task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


For Naivas, the anniversary event was presented as a starting point for continued engagement rather than a one-day celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The company said it planned to work with communities and other stakeholders on initiatives aimed at supporting environmental conservation and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
