Somali youth organizations have declared full support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s commitment to transition the nation toward a direct “one person, one vote” electoral model ahead of the scheduled May 2027 general elections.
In a joint statement issued by prominent youth leader Engr. Abdiweli Ali Musse, representatives of young Somalis affirmed their readiness to participate directly in the landmark 2027 polls, describing the shift toward universal suffrage as a vital step in advancing democratic governance and long-term stability.
“As Somali youth, we support President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s commitment to democratic progress and the implementation of the One Person, One Vote electoral system,” the statement read, adding that young people are fully prepared to contribute to a peaceful and democratic future for the nation.
Addressing political dynamics between the federal government and opposition figures, youth leaders welcomed the president’s openness to consultation and inclusive policy discussions.
“We also welcome the President’s stated willingness to listen to advice from the opposition,” Musse stated, encouraging constructive dialogue, national unity, and cooperation among all political stakeholders to ensure credible elections.
With youth under 30 accounting for over 70 percent of Somalia’s population, civil society representatives stressed that the upcoming 2027 elections present a historic opportunity to deepen civic engagement and institutionalize democratic representation across the Horn of Africa nation.
