Miano Hails Talanta Stadium as Game-Changer for Kenya’s Sports Tourism

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, has hailed the construction of the Talanta Raila Odinga International Stadium as a major milestone in Kenya’s ambition to become a leading destination for sports tourism.

Miano said the ultra-modern facility would strengthen Kenya’s international profile by attracting major sporting events, international football clubs, global media and thousands of sports tourists, while complementing the country’s traditional wildlife and coastal tourism attractions.

The CS applauded President William Ruto for delivering the ambitious infrastructure project, describing the stadium as a strategic investment that would expand Kenya’s tourism offering and create new opportunities across the hospitality and service sectors.

She noted that the world-class venue would play a significant role in positioning Kenya as a preferred destination for international sporting competitions, particularly as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“By providing a dedicated, elite arena ready to co-host AFCON 2027, this diversifies Kenya’s iconic tourism profile far beyond traditional wildlife safaris,” Miano said.

The stadium is expected to provide a major platform for sports tourism, bringing together sporting excellence, international exposure and economic opportunities for businesses that serve visiting fans and athletes.

Miano also highlighted plans for the stadium’s grand opening on January 5, 2027, which is expected to feature a high-profile football match between European clubs FC Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax.

The inaugural fixture is expected to provide an opportunity to showcase the facility to international audiences and reinforce Kenya’s growing ambitions in sports tourism.

According to the CS, the stadium’s appeal extends beyond football, with its capacity to host major tournaments and international events expected to generate benefits across the wider tourism value chain.

These include increased demand for hotel accommodation, restaurants, transport services, tour operators and other businesses that stand to benefit from the arrival of international visitors.

The facility is also expected to enhance Kenya’s visibility in international sporting circles, creating opportunities to market the country as a destination where visitors can combine sporting experiences with wildlife safaris, coastal holidays and cultural tourism.

Miano said the development aligned with the government’s efforts to diversify tourism products and attract new visitor segments, particularly sports enthusiasts who travel across borders to attend major competitions.

Kenya’s established reputation as a destination for athletics and its rich sporting heritage provide a strong foundation for expanding into other areas of sports tourism.

The stadium’s role in the preparations for AFCON 2027 is expected to further strengthen this ambition by placing Kenya before a global audience of football supporters, broadcasters, sponsors and international sporting stakeholders.

Miano called on the international community to look to Kenya as the country prepares to welcome visitors for major sporting events in 2027.

“Come home to Talanta, and let’s welcome the world to Kenya in 2027!” she said.

The stadium represents a significant opportunity for Kenya to link sports infrastructure with tourism promotion, using international competitions to showcase the country’s attractions while creating new avenues for investment, employment and business growth.

As preparations for AFCON 2027 gather momentum, the government hopes facilities such as Talanta Raila Odinga International Stadium will help establish Kenya as a destination where world-class sporting experiences meet the country’s renowned tourism offerings.
