CS Rebecca Miano Applauds Successful Hippo Translocation, Reaffirms Commitment to Human-Wildlife Coexistence

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano, EGH, has announced the successful completion of the hippo translocation exercise from Mukindu Dam in Rurii Ward, Ol Kalou, describing it as a major milestone in protecting both local communities and Kenya’s wildlife.

The operation, undertaken by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), safely relocated the hippos to a protected sanctuary after weeks of meticulous planning and execution. The animals had increasingly posed a threat to nearby residents, destroying crops, restricting access to water sources and exposing families and farmers to frequent danger.

CS Miano said the successful relocation has restored peace of mind to the people of Rurii Ward, enabling farmers to return to their fields with confidence, families to access water safely and communities to resume their daily activities without fear.

She noted that the exercise reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable human-wildlife coexistence, emphasizing that effective conservation must go hand in hand with safeguarding the safety, dignity and livelihoods of Kenyan communities.

The Cabinet Secretary commended the dedicated technical and conservation teams for their professionalism in executing the complex operation, while also expressing appreciation to local leaders and residents of Rurii Ward for their patience, cooperation and vigilance throughout the exercise.

She reaffirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, the State Department for Wildlife and the Kenya Wildlife Service will continue implementing practical conservation interventions that protect Kenya’s rich biodiversity while ensuring communities living near wildlife enjoy safety, security and sustainable livelihoods.
