ENG. MAURICE AKECH COMMENDED AS NCA LEADS COLLECTIVE ACTION TO SAFEGUARD PUBLIC SAFETY

The National Construction Authority (NCA) continues to demonstrate firm, professional, and proactive oversight of Kenya’s construction sector through a strong culture of institutional leadership, teamwork, and regulatory vigilance, under the stewardship of Executive Director and Registrar of Contractors, Eng. Maurice Akech, MBS.

Following the recent structural failure at a proposed residential development along Peponi Road, Westlands, the Authority’s coordinated and timely response reflected NCA’s institutional commitment to public safety, regulatory compliance, and accountability. Upon receipt of the incident report, NCA—working through its technical teams—immediately dispatched quality assurance officers, suspended construction works, and activated multi-sectoral coordination to secure the site and protect surrounding communities.

Eng. Akech has consistently provided strategic leadership that empowers NCA teams to uphold a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe construction practices, ensuring that developers, contractors, and consultants comply with national standards. This leadership framework emphasises shared responsibility, rapid decision-making, transparency, and close collaboration across government and professional bodies.

Under his stewardship, NCA has strengthened site inspection regimes, contractor registration compliance, and enforcement mechanisms, guided by the collective expertise of inspectors, engineers, and regulatory officers across the country. These efforts have reinforced professionalism and ethical practice throughout the construction industry.

Notably, NCA’s effectiveness has been amplified through sustained collaboration with key institutions including the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), BORAQS, NEMA, county governments, emergency services, and security agencies—demonstrating that construction safety is a shared national responsibility.

Beyond enforcement, the Authority continues to advance capacity building, contractor development, and sector-wide reforms, supporting industry players to meet safety, quality, and sustainability standards. This balanced approach—combining firm regulation with structured support—has strengthened trust between regulators and stakeholders.

As Kenya accelerates urban development and infrastructure growth, the collective leadership of the National Construction Authority, guided by Eng. Maurice Akech, remains central to ensuring that development is not only progressive, but also safe, resilient, and accountable for all.
