Kazi Majuu Football Tournament Kicks Off in Meru, Connecting Youth Talent to Global Opportunities

The Government has intensified efforts to empower young people through sports and overseas employment opportunities following the launch of the Kazi Majuu Football Tournament in Buuri, Meru County.

The tournament was officially flagged off by Principal Secretary for the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, Roseline Kathure Njogu, who described the initiative as a platform that goes beyond football by connecting talented youth to life-changing opportunities.

The launch attracted more than 2,000 young people from across Buuri, demonstrating the enthusiasm among Kenyan youth for initiatives that combine sports, mentorship and career development.

To support grassroots football, the State Department distributed football kits and balls to 60 community teams. Ten teams, including two women’s teams, competed in the opening round, showcasing impressive talent, discipline and sportsmanship.

Speaking during the event, the Principal Secretary said the tournament is designed to inspire young people to pursue their ambitions with confidence, whether in professional sports, entrepreneurship, skilled employment or opportunities in the international labour market through the Government’s Kazi Majuu programme.

She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating sustainable employment pathways for Kenyan youth, noting that the Kazi Majuu initiative continues to open doors for qualified workers seeking overseas jobs while promoting safe, orderly and dignified labour migration.

The Principal Secretary also conveyed President William Ruto’s support for programmes that equip young people with the skills, exposure and opportunities needed to unlock their full potential and contribute to national development.

She commended the national leadership from Meru County, the County Executive Committee Member for Sports, local leaders, tournament organizers, coaches, volunteers and the participating youth for making the launch a success through their collaboration and commitment.

The Buuri tournament marks the beginning of a wider national rollout of the Kazi Majuu Football Tournament, which seeks to use sport as a powerful tool for identifying talent, nurturing leadership, promoting social cohesion and creating awareness of employment opportunities available to Kenyan youth both locally and abroad.

As the tournament moves to other parts of the country, it is expected to inspire thousands more young people to pursue their dreams, reinforcing the message that talent, determination and opportunity can transform lives and that, with the right support, Kenyan youth have the potential to succeed on the global stage.
