The Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association (KEWOPA) recently hosted a powerful and thought-provoking session in Garissa County, where women, youth, men, and persons with disabilities gathered to discuss the importance of women stepping into leadership and decision-making spaces. This event, which underscored the significance of women’s involvement in politics, served as a call to action for local communities to support female leadership.
The conversation highlighted the unique challenges that women face when running for office, particularly in regions where politics has historically been dominated by men. Women shared their personal struggles, with many describing the complex and often discouraging reality of standing for elections in an environment still plagued by gender biases. However, despite these obstacles, the women were emboldened by the collective encouragement to take up elective positions, support each other, and work together to effect meaningful change in society.
Several participants expressed their firm belief that women should not allow societal norms or gender stereotypes to stand in their way. They noted that the path to leadership is not only about personal ambition but also about uplifting future generations of women who will look to them as role models. It became clear that while the journey ahead is difficult, these women were determined to persevere and continue pushing for gender equality in politics.
A recurring theme throughout the session was the need for allies—particularly men who believe in the potential of women leaders. It was emphasized that men have an essential role to play in the push for gender equality, not just as supporters, but as advocates for women’s participation in leadership roles. The women acknowledged that their path to political success would be much smoother with the backing of their male counterparts, as well as a supportive community that is committed to embracing gender equality.
“Garissa is rising, and with it, the voices of women determined to lead,” said one participant, reflecting on the shifting tides in the region. The event made it clear that women in Garissa are ready to challenge the status quo, break barriers, and take their rightful place in leadership. The energy in the room was palpable as women voiced their determination to create a lasting impact, not just for themselves, but for their daughters and future generations of women leaders.
KEWOPA, led by National Chairperson Leah Sankaire, continues to play a crucial role in the empowerment of women across Kenya. Through initiatives like this, KEWOPA provides the necessary support and resources to women, helping them overcome the barriers that have historically kept them out of leadership positions. With strong leadership and unwavering determination, Garissa’s women are more ready than ever to step into these roles and transform their communities.
This event is part of KEWOPA’s ongoing mission to foster a more inclusive and diverse political environment, where women are not only participants but also key decision-makers. The session also marked a significant step forward in empowering women in Garissa and other counties, reminding everyone of the power of collaboration, allyship, and solidarity in the fight for gender equality in politics.
As Garissa’s women rally together, they are proving that the future is female, and with the support of both men and women, they are poised to make lasting changes in the political landscape.
