The NCPWD registers persons with disabilities, providing them with access to various benefits, including:
- Medical care Free medication and therapy services, including drugs for epilepsy and other neurodevelopmental disabilities.
- Assistive devices Wheelchairs, hearing aids, colostomy bags, and other devices to enhance mobility and independence.
3.Education Scholarships and funding for education, including support for children with developmental disabilities.
4.Tax exemption Tax relief for persons with disabilities and their caregivers. - Vehicle exemption Duty-free importation of vehicles for personal use.
Challenges and Progress
Despite progress, challenges persist, including:
- Stigma and hiding Some families hide persons with disabilities due to stigma, making it difficult for the council to reach them.2. Limited awareness Many people are unaware of the council’s services and benefits.
However, the council has seen an upsurge in registrations, indicating increased awareness and willingness to seek support.
Caregivers and Support
The NCPWD recognizes the importance of caregivers and is working to:
- Ermpower caregivers Provide support and tax exemption for caregivers.
- Regulations Develop regulations to implement the new Persons with Disabilities Act.
The council’s work is crucial in promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in Kenya. By providing support and services, the NCPWD is helping to break down barriers and empower persons with disabilities to live fulfilling lives.
