Elijah Mwangi, PS Sports inspect Talanta Sports City
NAIROBI, KENYA β The Principal Secretary for Sports, Mr. Elijah Mwangi on Thursday hosted the Senate Committee on Transport, Roads, and Housing for a comprehensive inspection tour of the Talanta Sports City (Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium). The visit was aimed at auditing the progress, procurement standards, and the ultimate delivery timeline of the landmark project.
The Senate Committee joined PS Mwangi at the Talanta grounds following their earlier morning investigations at Wilson Airport. The joint delegation conducted a walk-through of the site to assess the service levels attained so far in the stadiumβs development.
Speaking during the tour, the Committee expressed satisfaction with the physical work done by the contractors, who comprise a specialized team from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the Ministry of Sports.
“We have come to check on the status report of this particular development. We have established here that the leadership on-site is indicating the stadium could be structurally accomplished by May, but realistically, full utility for the public and sporting events will begin around July,” the Committee noted.

A primary focus of the inspection was fiscal oversight. Both the PS and the Senators emphasized that high-level infrastructure must align with strict “value for money” principles.
“We are very keen on making sure that the procurement was done the right way and the sum of resources being used here are within the realm that ensures value for money,” the delegation affirmed. “We have checked the stadium and we think it is pretty well done so far. Our next step is to confirm that there are no unnecessary contract variations that might inflate the budget.”
The Talanta Sports City is expected to be a centerpiece for regional sports, and the Ministry of Sports remains committed to meeting international standards. PS Elijah Mwangi reassured the Committee that the collaboration between the military and the ministry is designed to fast-track the project without compromising on quality or transparency.
