Somalia Approves Africa Youth Charter, Ushering in New Era for Youth Empowerment and Regional Integration

The Somali Cabinet has officially ratified the African Youth Charter, marking a major legal milestone designed to accelerate youth-led socio-economic development and deepen the Horn of Africa nation’s integration into the broader African Union framework.

The adoption of the legal framework provides a formal foundation to protect and advance the rights of young people across the country, prioritizing equitable access to quality education, healthcare, employment, entrepreneurship, and political decision-making.

With over 75 percent of Somalia’s population under the age of 30, observers view the decision as a decisive shift toward harnessing the demographic dividend for long-term national recovery and regional stability.

“With this Charter, Somali youth are guaranteed a seat at the table, greater opportunities, and the assurance that their voices will actively shape the country’s future,” said Eng. Abdiweli Ali Musse, Director of the Somali Youth Leadership and Initiatives Center and former advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The passage of the document follows extensive efforts led by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mohamed Abdulkadir Ali, who spearheaded strategic engagements across government departments, civil society groups, youth organization representatives, and international partners to secure Cabinet support.

The charter’s ratification aligns Somalia with continental standards established by the African Union to promote inclusive growth, youth leadership, and institutional accountability. Officials emphasized that effective implementation will depend on sustained collaboration between state institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners.
