KWS Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga Leads Kenya in Honouring Rangers on World Ranger Day

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga has led the nation in paying glowing tribute to Kenya’s rangers, describing them as the unsung heroes whose courage, sacrifice and unwavering dedication continue to safeguard the country’s rich wildlife heritage and protected ecosystems.

Speaking during the national World Ranger Day celebrations held at Tsavo West National Park, Prof. Kanga emphasized that the success of Kenya’s globally acclaimed conservation efforts rests firmly on the commitment of its rangers, who work tirelessly under challenging conditions to protect wildlife, combat poaching and preserve biodiversity for future generations.

“Behind every thriving wildlife population, every secure protected area and every conservation success story stands a ranger,” Prof. Kanga said. “Every patrol undertaken, every wildlife crime prevented and every community protected strengthens our nation’s conservation efforts.”

The KWS Director General reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to building a highly skilled, well-equipped and motivated ranger force capable of responding to emerging conservation challenges while maintaining Kenya’s position as a global leader in wildlife protection. He noted that investing in rangers is essential to securing the country’s natural heritage and sustaining the wildlife economy that supports thousands of livelihoods.

Prof. Kanga also recognized the invaluable support of ranger families, conservation partners and local communities, observing that successful conservation can only be achieved through strong collaboration between all stakeholders. He praised communities living alongside wildlife for embracing conservation initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence while creating sustainable economic opportunities.

The celebrations brought together leaders from the national and county governments, conservation organizations and community representatives in a united show of appreciation for the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting Kenya’s iconic wildlife and natural resources.

Under the leadership of Prof. Erustus Kanga, KWS continues to strengthen ranger welfare, enhance operational capacity and champion innovative conservation strategies that ensure Kenya’s wildlife remains protected for generations to come.
