PS HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT CHARLES HINGA MWAURA CBS, CA(SA) DELIVERS POWERFUL MASHUJAA DAY MESSAGE: “Let Us Uphold Our Heroes’ Legacy Through Unity, Service and Sustainable Development”
Happy Mashujaa Day! – PS Hinga Calls on Kenyans to Build a Better Kenya
Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga Mwaura, CBS, CA (SA), has joined millions of Kenyans across the country and in the diaspora in celebrating Mashujaa Day 2026, honouring the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of the heroes and heroines who shaped Kenya’s history.
In a heartfelt Mashujaa Day message, PS Hinga, one of the most transformative public servants in President William Ruto’s administration and the man at the centre of Kenya’s Affordable Housing revolution, paid glowing tribute to the freedom fighters, nation builders and everyday heroes whose blood, sweat and tears gave birth to the Kenya we enjoy today.
“Happy Mashujaa Day! 🇰🇪 On this special day, we honour the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of our heroes and heroines who shaped our nation’s history,” PS Hinga said.
From Mau Mau to Affordable Housing – The Legacy Continues
According to PS Hinga, Mashujaa Day is not just about remembering the past — it is about taking responsibility for the future.
He noted that the heroes of our liberation struggle — from Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Waciuri to Mekatilili Wa Menza, from Tom Mboya to Ronald Ngala, from Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga — fought not for medals, but for a better Kenya where every citizen would have dignity, shelter, opportunity and pride.
That, he said, is the same spirit that drives the State Department for Housing and Urban Development today.
“Our heroes dreamt of a Kenya where every family would have a decent place to call home, where cities would be orderly, inclusive and humane, and where no Kenyan would be left behind. That dream lives on in what we do every day,” PS Hinga stated in an extended message.
PS Hinga’s Call: Unity, Dedicated Service, Sustainable Development
The PS, a Certified Chartered Accountant (CA SA) and holder of the prestigious Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) for his distinguished service, called on all Kenyans to uphold the legacy of the country’s heroes in three practical ways:
1. Embracing Unity: Kenya is one nation made of 45+ communities. Our heroes united to fight colonialism. We must unite to fight poverty, unemployment, corruption and division. Tribalism, hate and political intolerance have no place in the Kenya our Mashujaa envisioned.
2. Dedicated Public Service: PS Hinga, who is known for his hands-on leadership style — always on construction sites from Nairobi’s Mukuru to Kisumu’s Anderson, from Mombasa’s Buxton to Eldoret’s Pioneer — said true patriotism is shown through service. Every public servant must serve with integrity, every Kenyan must serve in their small corner.
3. Sustainable Development: The PS who is leading Kenya’s biggest housing program since independence — with over 200,000 affordable housing units under construction across 42 counties, thousands of markets, and a plan to transform slums into estates — said sustainable development is the best tribute to our heroes.
“Let us build houses that last, cities that breathe, and infrastructure that serves generations. Our children should find a Kenya better than the one we found,” he emphasized.
The Man Transforming Kenya’s Skyline
Under PS Charles Hinga Mwaura, Kenya’s housing sector has witnessed a revolution never seen before. From the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) to the Affordable Housing Levy, from the Kenya Urban Support Program to the markets being built for mama mboga, PS Hinga has turned policy into tangible homes, jobs and dignity.
More than 300,000 youth are now employed directly and indirectly in housing sites. Jua kali artisans are supplying doors, windows and steel. Mama mboga are getting modern markets. Slum dwellers are becoming homeowners.
For many Kenyans, Hinga himself is a modern-day Mashujaa — a technocrat who chose to serve, who works day and night, and who believes housing is not a commodity, but a human right.
This Mashujaa Day, as the Kenyan flag flies high across all housing projects from Shauri Moyo to Bondeni, from Homa Bay to Kiambu, PS Hinga’s message resonates deeply: The best way to honour our heroes is to build a better Kenya.
Happy Mashujaa Day 2026 from PS Charles Hinga Mwaura, CBS, CA (SA) — Principal Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
