By Njeri Irungu
A section of MPs from Kenya’s tea growing constituencies met The East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA) to discuss on how to improve tea exportation in the country. Some of the MPs are drawn from Kiambu, Embu, Nandi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga among other counties. The Caucus which is chaired by Githunguri Member of Parliament Hon. Gathoni wa Muchomba decided that there is a need to establish a direct link between all tea stakeholders in the tea sector.

EATA Managing Director, Mr.Abdi Hussein said that the Kenyan tea is packaged in Egypt yet the government can make it easier by having it packaged here in Kenya. The main Kenyan tea importer, he said, is Egypt and Singapore so there is also a need to create more markets for the crop.

The 13 member caucus through the chairperson suggested that the tea policy that was abandoned in 2014 should be relooked and reviewed since it was very beneficial to the farmer. The taxation regime in the country needs to improve and the Senate should also review the Pending Bill that was abandoned by the 12th Parliament.

The Githunguri Legislator said,”together with the Deputy President, we will push for more value addition on all cash crops.”

Manyatta MP, Hon Gitonga Mukunyi added,”We will begin yo remove app impediments to the value addition to all our cash crops; maize, coffee and tea which will then give the guaranteed minimum return to the farmer.”

Sainath Education Institute to help Rutoโ€™s government to create one million textile jobs

Sainath Education Institute CEO Rajeev Arora has pledged to help President William Rutoโ€™s government to create one million textile jobs through providing world class training for apparel sector workers.

Arora said that last year he set up a Skills Development Centre of Excellence (SDCE) in Kitengela at the EPZ plaza, which  provides up-to-date, relevant and practical training and capacity building for the various segments of the apparel manufacturing sector in Kenya while also solving the societal problem of youth unemployment in Kenya by bridging the skills gap.

โ€œSo far 560 youth ย have undergone training out of which 505 or 90 percent of them have secured employed in the EPZ factories,โ€ Arora said.

Arora  who has more than 38 years of consulting experience for 24 African countries in the textile sector has plans to train atleast 1500 garment workers in 2023.

He revealed that the idea to set up the institution was born from the existing shortage of skilled workers in the apparel manufacturing sector in Kenya which currently employs over 40,000 workers.

โ€œAt the current capacity, the industry has a shortage of 10,000 โ€“ 15,000 skilled workers, 60 percent of which are sewing machine operators. Training of sewing machine operators to date has been ad-hoc with non-standardized in-house training,โ€ he observed.

Arora added that currently employers report that they are not able to get qualified staff on time which reduces the competitiveness of Kenyaโ€™s textile sector.
