RSPO expands global partnerships to drive sustainable palm oil transformation

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is strengthening its global partnerships as part of its ongoing mission to make palm oil production more environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and economically viable.

Founded as a multi-stakeholder initiative, RSPO brings together growers, processors, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, investors, and civil society organisations to set global standards for certified sustainable palm oil. The organisation’s core aim is to reduce deforestation, protect biodiversity, improve labour conditions, and support smallholder farmers across the palm oil supply chain.Building a global sustainability networkRSPO’s model is built on collaboration. Rather than working in isolation, it connects actors across continents to align on sustainability standards and traceability systems. Through certification frameworks and shared responsibility rules, RSPO encourages companies to source certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) and improve transparency in their supply chains.Recent initiatives highlight the organisation’s growing international reach. RSPO has expanded engagement across key markets including Europe, North America, Asia and Africa through roadshows, member partnerships, and regional collaborations designed to strengthen responsible sourcing commitments among major companies in food, personal care, and retail sectors. Supporting smallholders and inclusive growthA central pillar of RSPO’s strategy is the inclusion of smallholder farmers, who represent millions of producers globally. Through certification support programs, training, and funding initiatives, RSPO aims to help smallholders improve yields while meeting international sustainability standards.Recent developments show increased investment in smallholder support, alongside tighter global requirements for traceability and compliance with sustainability standards—particularly in export markets such as Europe. Strengthening standards and accountabilityRSPO continues to refine its certification system to improve environmental integrity and market impact. Its “Shared Responsibility” framework ensures that not only growers but also downstream companies contribute to sustainable palm oil uptake targets and reporting obligations. This approach is designed to close gaps in the supply chain, increase accountability, and ensure that sustainability commitments extend beyond plantations into processing, manufacturing, and retail. Why sustainable palm oil mattersWhile palm oil is widely used in food, cosmetics, and household products, it has long been associated with deforestation and habitat loss when produced unsustainably. RSPO argues that eliminating palm oil entirely is not the solution; instead, transforming how it is produced and sourced is key.Sustainably certified palm oil is positioned as a practical pathway to balance environmental protection with global demand, given that palm oil is one of the most efficient vegetable oil crops in terms of yield per hectare. The road aheadAs global demand for transparency and sustainability increases, RSPO’s role as a convening platform is becoming more significant. Its emphasis on cross-border partnerships, corporate accountability, and smallholder inclusion reflects a broader shift toward collaborative sustainability governance in global commodity markets. However, the effectiveness of certification systems continues to be debated among stakeholders, making transparency, enforcement, and continuous improvement critical to RSPO’s credibility moving forward.
