The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, together with its State Agencies (SAGAs), staged an exciting display of sporting prowess today at the Stima Club grounds in Ruaraka during the Ministerial Sports Day.

The event, which brought together staff and teams from across the Ministry and its agencies, featured friendly yet competitive matches in football and volleyball for both men and women. The competitions served as internal trials to select the official squads that will represent the Ministry during the upcoming Energy Week celebrations on Mashujaa Day in Kitui County.

One of the highlights of the day was the men’s football semi-final clash between KenGen and REREC. The tightly contested match kept spectators on edge as REREC. The match ended in a draw and both teams with play during during the upcoming Energy Week celebrations on Mashujaa Day in Kitui County.

Eng. Jonathan Mbutu Manager for Alternative energy Rural Electricification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) attributed success of their team to hard and dedication to the sport.

“Our team has been training intensely for the past two weeks,” Mbutu added.

According to Mbutu, the secret to success was careful planning though team work.

“We divided our time in the field into eight minutes to ensure players have enough time to rest,” he added.

During the tournament, REREC registered impressive performance in the group stages and in the semi-final match they thrashed, the   state department of energy men’s team 6-0.

The day was not only about competition but also about fostering teamwork, wellness, and camaraderie among Ministry staff. In his remarks, a Ministry official noted that such events enhance workplace bonding while also promoting the importance of physical fitness and mental wellbeing.

The volleyball courts also buzzed with action as men’s and women’s teams faced off in thrilling encounters that showcased raw talent and determination.

As the Energy Week approaches, today’s event marks the beginning of what promises to be an exciting build-up to the celebrations in Kitui County, where the Ministry teams will challenge local county sides in a show of both athletic skill and community spirit.
