NAIROBI, Sept.22 (Xinhua)—The United Nations’ International Labour Organization (ILO) said on Tuesday that about 80 percent of African migrants move within the continent.
Aida Awel, chief technical advisor ILO Better Regular Migration Management (BRMM) programme told journalists in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya one of the factors contributing to the concentration of African migration to the continent is due to the limited legal pathways for movements outside of the region.
“African nations also share similar cultures making movement within the continent easier,” Awel said during a forum for ILO experts, Kenyan high-level officials as well as representatives from the workers’ and employers’ organization.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) about 25.1 million Africans lived outside their home countries in 2024.
Awel said that the most popular destinations for African migrants were South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.
She revealed that the key drivers for intra-Africa migration was the search for economic opportunities such as work and better business prospects
