The Hon Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Rebecca Miano, today marked a significant milestone in Kwale County with the official launch of the Chale Community Boardwalk and the Mangrove Planting Campaign, hosted by H.E. Fatuma Achani.
The Chale Community Boardwalk now firmly places the coastal destination on Kenya’s tourism map, offering visitors, researchers, and conservationists a rare opportunity to venture deep into the mangrove ecosystem. The thoughtfully designed pathway allows for close observation of the intricate mangrove structures and the rich marine biodiversity they support—without disrupting their delicate habitat.
This initiative aligns with the broader environmental agenda championed by H.E. William Ruto, under the ambitious 15 Billion Tree Growing Campaign. Already, over 11,000 mangrove trees have been planted in Chale, contributing meaningfully to national reforestation and climate resilience efforts.
At its core, this project embodies the spirit of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda—ensuring that local communities are not sidelined, but instead take center stage as custodians and beneficiaries of their natural resources. The Chale community is poised to become not just participants in tourism, but owners, guides, and key stakeholders in the sustainable use of their ecosystem.
The partnership between the national and county governments stands out as a model of cooperative governance, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and inclusive growth.
Together, these efforts are shaping a tourism sector that is not only competitive, but also resilient and deeply rooted in community ownership and conservation.
