Akwa Ibom Health Honoured in Nairobi for Universal Healthcare Excellence

In a glitzy gala that underscored the growing synergy in African healthcare innovation, Dr. Igbemi Arthur, the Executive Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency (AKSHIA), was over the weekend conferred with the prestigious African Prestige Honoris award in Nairobi.

The award, presented during a high-level summit of continental policy leaders, recognizes Dr. Arthur’s transformative leadership in expanding health insurance coverage and pioneering sustainable financing models in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State.

The Nairobi ceremony brought together healthcare titans from across the continent to celebrate individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

A Milestone for AKSHIA

Under Dr. Arthur’s stewardship, AKSHIA has been lauded for its aggressive enrollment drives and its ability to bridge the gap between rural populations and quality clinical services.

The “African Prestige Honoris” committee noted that his “transparent and innovative approach” serves as a blueprint for sub-national health agencies across West Africa.

Accepting the golden plaque to a standing ovation, Dr. Arthur was quick to deflect the personal glory, dedicating the achievement to the political will driving the “Arise Agenda” in his home state.

Tribute to Governor Umo Eno

In a heartfelt acceptance speech, Dr. Arthur expressed profound gratitude to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno.

“This recognition is not just for me, but for a leader who dares to believe in the sanctity of human life and the necessity of affordable healthcare,” Dr. Arthur stated.

“I want to specifically thank His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for his unwavering support and for believing in my capacity to deliver on this critical mandate.

“He further noted that the Governor’s commitment to the health sector has provided the agency with the necessary resources to ensure that no Akwa Ibomite is pushed into poverty by medical bills.

“The Governor’s vision for the state is what fuels our passion at AKSHIA.

He has created an enabling environment where innovation can thrive, and for that, we are seeing the fruits today in the city of Nairobi,” he added.

Continental Inspiration

The recognition of a Nigerian health official in the heart of East Africa highlights a growing trend of cross-border learning. Kenyan health officials present at the forum noted that the challenges faced by health insurance agencies in West Africa—ranging from premium collection to service provider accreditation—mirror those in Kenya’s own transition from the NHIF to the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

As Dr. Arthur returns to Uyo, the “African Prestige Honoris” serves as a reminder that local solutions to healthcare challenges are increasingly gaining global attention.

For Akwa Ibom, it is a validation of a system that is slowly but surely ensuring that “health for all” is not just a slogan, but a reality.
