Kajiado Woman Representative Leah Sankaire Backs Competition (Amendment) Bill to Protect Suppliers and Small Businesses
Nairobi, July 1, 2026 – Kajiado Woman Representative Sopiato Leah Sankaire has expressed strong support for the Competition (Amendment) Bill, No. 4 of 2026, describing it as a progressive piece of legislation that will strengthen protections for suppliers and promote fairness in Kenya’s commercial sector.
Speaking during parliamentary proceedings, Sankaire said the Bill addresses long-standing concerns affecting suppliers and businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which continue to face delayed payments, unfair contract terminations, unilateral price reductions, and other exploitative contractual practices by dominant buyers.
She noted that such practices have hindered business growth, weakened supplier confidence, and constrained the ability of many enterprises to expand and create employment.
The legislator said the proposed law introduces important safeguards by requiring fair contractual terms between buyers and suppliers while imposing sanctions against businesses that abuse their market power through unfair commercial practices.
Sankaire observed that the legislation will help establish a more transparent and accountable business environment, ensuring suppliers receive fair treatment and are able to compete on equitable terms.
“The Competition (Amendment) Bill, No. 4 of 2026, is a significant step towards protecting suppliers from exploitation and creating a level playing field for businesses. By promoting fairness and accountability in commercial relationships, we can strengthen our economy and empower entrepreneurs to grow and create jobs,” she said.
The Kajiado Woman Representative reaffirmed her commitment to supporting legislation that advances economic justice, protects small businesses, and fosters an inclusive and competitive marketplace capable of driving sustainable national development
