Ticket Fraud Loophole Closed Six in Court Over Fake SGR Booking Syndicate

By Elizabeth Amayia

The track has finally run out for a tech-savvy online syndicate accused of running a high-tech ticketing scam. On Tuesday, six suspects linked to a sophisticated, fake Madaraka Express booking scheme were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo at the Kibera Law Courts.

The court ordered that the suspects Evarest Obwoya Omaywa, Kelvin Kibet (alias Festus Kibet), John Omayo Obwocha (alias Collins), George Kibet, Brian Cheruiyot, and Brian Onwonga remain in custody at the Muthaiga Police Station pending further legal directions.

The proceedings hit a brief speed bump and were adjourned to Thursday, July 16, 2026, after one of the suspects claimed to be under18 years old.

An age assessment has been ordered, and if the suspect is confirmed to be a minor, the state will step in to provide the necessary legal representation.

This legal action follows a meticulous investigation led by Chief Inspector Nickson Kinyua, which revealed how the syndicate operated a highly deceptive digital trap designed to exploit desperate travelers.

The group ran a network of cloned TikTok and Facebook pages meticulously designed to perfectly mimic official Kenya Railways and Madaraka Express channels.

Through these fake platforms, they lured unsuspecting passengers by advertising non-existent train tickets and offering fraudulent “seat reallocation” services for trains that were already fully booked.

They pocketed direct mobile payments, leaving stranded passengers with absolutely nothing but empty pockets and zero booking confirmations.

The elaborate scam ultimately fell apart when detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters tracked the network down to Nakuru County.

Following a swift crackdown, the suspects were arrested and transferred to Nairobi, where they were booked on July 13, 2026. Investigating officers are currently seeking a 21-day detention period to conduct thorough forensic examinations on the digital devices and evidence seized during the raid.
