PS Elijah Mwangi Leads Government Efforts to Mitigate Landslides in Murang’a

By John Kariuki

Principal Secretary for Mining Elijah Mwangi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the destructive geo-hazard challenges facing Kenyan communities. He emphasized the need for strong collaboration among leaders, state agencies, and county governments to save lives, prevent property losses, and prevent the displacement of affected families.

In a follow-up assessment visit to Musoso in Murang’a County, PS Mwangi joined Kangema MP Hon. Peter Irungu Kihungi and local residents to assess the situation of 30 families displaced by landslides that struck the area in May last year. During the visit, he officially handed over the Geo-Hazard Mapping and Assessment Report for Murang’a County, a detailed study containing expert recommendations on mitigating landslides and other geo-hazard risks in the region.

The report is the culmination of months of investigations, studies, and field tests by experts from the State Department for Mining. Following last year’s landslides, the national and county governments, together with local leaders, churches, and institutions, mobilized in support of affected households while working toward a long-term solution.

Under PS Mwangi’s leadership, the government deployed a team of geologists to assess the region’s landslide risks, determine causes, evaluate risk levels, and propose implementable solutions. Their findings highlighted key contributing factors, including geological formations, climate conditions, steep terrain, porous soil, and human activities such as farming, road construction, and land developments.

Breaking the Silence: CEO Rhoda Kabiti Calls for Urgent Action on Hearing Loss in Africa

By John Kariuki

As the world marks World Hearing Day 2025, Rhoda Kabiti, CEO of the Kenya Society for Deaf Children (KSDC), is calling for urgent action to address the growing crisis of hearing loss in Africa. With an estimated 40 million Africans living with disabling hearing loss, the condition has become a major barrier to education, employment, and social inclusion. Despite its far-reaching impact, hearing loss remains one of the most neglected public health challenges on the continent.

Unaddressed hearing loss has serious consequences. Many children struggle with speech development and academic performance, while adults face limited job opportunities and economic hardship. The financial cost is staggering, with African economies losing an estimated USD 27.1 billion annually due to lost productivity. Beyond the economic toll, hearing loss often leads to social isolation, stigma, and reduced quality of life for millions.

Kabiti emphasizes that much of this hearing loss is preventable. More than 60% of childhood hearing loss can be avoided through basic public health measures such as vaccinations, proper maternal care, and early screening. For adults, many leading causes—ear infections, excessive noise exposure, and ototoxic medications—can be managed through timely intervention and awareness. However, with increasing life expectancy, age-related hearing loss is also becoming a major concern.

A growing threat is recreational noise exposure, particularly among young people. Over one billion youth worldwide are at risk of permanent hearing damage due to prolonged headphone use and exposure to loud music in clubs, concerts, and other entertainment venues. Kabiti warns that without urgent preventive measures, hearing loss among the youth could reach alarming levels in the coming decades.

Despite the rising burden of hearing loss, ear and hearing care remain under-prioritized in many African nations. However, some progress has been made. Today, 20 African countries have designated national ear and hearing care coordinators, while 11 nations have established functional national hearing care programs. While these are positive steps, Kabiti insists that more needs to be done to ensure quality hearing care is accessible to all.

To address the crisis, Kabiti is urging governments, healthcare providers, and communities to take bold and immediate action in key areas. She calls for increased access to hearing care services, especially in underserved communities, and stresses the need to combat stigma and misconceptions through public education campaigns. Integrating ear and hearing care into primary healthcare systems, expanding training programs for hearing care professionals, and investing in affordable assistive devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants are also critical steps.

Kabiti highlights this year’s World Hearing Day theme, “Changing Mindsets: Empower Yourself. Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality for All,” as a powerful call to action. She urges individuals and communities to take responsibility for their hearing health by adopting preventive measures and advocating for better access to care.

As the world observes World Hearing Day 2025, Kabiti is calling on African leaders, policymakers, and health stakeholders to step up efforts to break the silence, empower communities, and ensure that ear and hearing care is a reality for all.

Search and Rescue Operations Underway Following Deadly Attack on Turkana Fishermen in Lake Turkana

By John Kariuki

A major search and rescue (SAR) operation is underway in Lotiira, Lake Turkana, following a deadly attack on Turkana fishermen by Dassanach militia from Ethiopia on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Reports from the ground indicate that 57 individuals are currently missing, as confirmed by the Turkana community, while two bodies have been recovered and identified.

The SAR efforts have faced major hurdles, with Kenyan authorities encountering frustration from the Ethiopian side due to a lack of structured security dialogue between the two nations. However, despite these challenges, Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), in collaboration with the Kenya Fisheries Service (KeFS), swiftly deployed a fuelled boat for rescue operations, which departed from Kalokol to Todonyang to commence the mission.

Security coordination remains a top priority in the operation. On March 1, 2025, a high-level security meeting presided over by Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Hassan Abdullahi led to an agreement between Kenyan and Ethiopian authorities to allow SAR teams access to the affected waters.

Today, March 2, 2025, the SAR mission was officially launched in Lotiira by Turkana County Commissioner Mr. Julius Kavita, accompanied by security teams and key Turkana County leaders. Among those present were Turkana North MP Hon. Paul Ekwom Nabuin Shariff, former Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Munyes, and former Turkana County Assembly Speaker Hon. Christopher Nakuleu, among others.

In a show of heightened government intervention, Principal Secretary for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Geoffrey Kaituko, issued a directive on Thursday, February 28, for the deployment of a high-capacity patrol boat stationed in Kalokol to Todonyang for SAR operations. Additional support has been mobilized, with Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) and Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) providing more boats and resources to enhance the operation.

The search and rescue mission is now a joint effort between Kenyan and Ethiopian teams, with divers and security personnel from both nations working together to locate the missing fishermen. The situation remains tense, but authorities are determined to ensure that every effort is made to find and rescue those unaccounted for.

As the operation continues, leaders and security officials urge for calm and cooperation between both countries to prevent further incidents and improve cross-border security for fishermen and local communities reliant on Lake Turkana’s resources.

MANAGING DIABETES TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE

Dr. Moses Mwangi is a renowned medic and successful professional. He takes a moment to share with us more about the management of diabetes.
Understanding how to effectively live with diabetes and manage it to maintain a normal life is paramount for anyone affected by this prevalent condition. Diabetes mellitus can impact individuals of all ages.
There are several forms of diabetes; however, the primary types include: Type 2 diabetes, also called maturity onset diabetes is the most common, and is accountable for up to 85% of people living with the condition; Type 1 diabetes, which predominantly sets in during childhood and young adults; and gestational (pregnancy-associated) diabetes. A combination of management strategies can enable effective control of the condition, promoting a healthy life and reducing the risk of complications.
Below are important points to note about diabetes.
What is diabetes and how does it present?
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. In Type 1 diabetes, this elevation occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, the condition is marked by insulin resistance, where the body does not respond appropriately to insulin, a vital hormone that regulates blood sugar.
Can diabetes be cured or reversed?
Diabetes is a long-term condition that requires ongoing monitoring and management, whether through lifestyle adjustment alone or in combination with medications, oral or injectables, as may be required. In some cases, particularly among individuals with Type 2 diabetes who have a shorter disease duration, minimal complications, and good glycemic control with minimal medications, the condition may be effectively controlled without the need for ongoing pharmacotherapy. Weight loss achieved through lifestyle adjustment, medications, or weight-loss surgery has been associated with an increased likelihood of remission. However, it is important to recognize that remission does not constitute a cure, as diabetes can recur if lifestyle modifications are not rigorously maintained. Lifelong monitoring and regular follow-up with healthcare teams remain essential, even in the absence of medication.
Do I need to be on medication?
Medication requirements vary from person to person. Depending on the degree of glycemic control, some patients may need long-term medication, while others can manage their condition by carefully monitoring their diet and blood sugar levels. In certain cases, higher doses of medication may be necessary in the initial stages, with the possibility of gradual reduction as blood sugar levels stabilize. Any modification in medication should be conducted only under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Is there a special diet for a person living with diabetes?
Nutritional needs for those aiming to prevent or control diabetes are highly individualized, taking into account factors such as body weight, weight loss goals, diabetes-related complications, glycemic control, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, personal and cultural preferences, health literacy, access to nutritious foods, willingness to change behaviours, and any barriers to change (ADA, 2024). Ideally, every individual living with diabetes should consult a dietician for personalized dietary advice.
• Carbohydrates/ starch should be limited ( low carbohydrates or zero carbohydrate diet is an important factor in controlling diabetes. Additionally, a high-fibre diet is encouraged, minimally processed sources such as non-starchy vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains (e.g., whole wheat, oats, brown rice, barand quinoa). Opt for dairy products with minimal added sugars and avoid sugar-sweetened beverages, including fruit juices, and instead increase your intake of water or low-calorie alternatives.
• Fats: Adopt a dietary pattern similar to the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats. Use oils such as olive, canola, peanut, and avocado (MUFA) or corn, safflower, and soybean oils (PUFA). Include sources of PUFA like walnuts, sunflower seeds, and fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel, herring, trout), while avoiding saturated fats found in red meat, dairy products, and certain tropical oils like coconut and palm oils.
• Proteins: Include both plant-based and animal-based proteins. Plant sources encompass legumes, lentils, tofu, soybeans, green peas, nuts (almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia, peanuts, pecans, walnuts), and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, or linseed). Recommended animal proteins include skinless poultry, low-fat beef, fish, eggs, and reduced-fat dairy products such as low-fat yoghurt and cheese.
Does having obesity predispose me to diabetes?
Overweight and obesity are well-established risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. The risk is particularly heightened when excess weight is concentrated around the abdomen, as visceral fat surrounding the internal organs is closely associated with insulin resistance.
Is a diet high in protein good for a person living with diabetes?
For individuals with diabetes, the emphasis should be on maintaining a balanced overall dietary pattern rather than focusing solely on specific foods. A healthy diet must include appropriate amounts of proteins, carbohydrates ( must be low), and fats, as all three are essential for proper body function. Research indicates that an excessive intake of high-fat animal protein may contribute to insulin resistance, a key factor in the development of diabetes.
What are the risk factors for developing diabetes?
Approximately 90 per cent of diabetes cases are classified as Type 2. The risk of developing diabetes increases with age, a family history of the disease, and individuals of African or Asian descent. Additional risk factors include a history of high blood pressure, overweight or obesity, cigarette smoking, the use of certain medications (such as steroids or antiretroviral drugs for HIV), elevated cholesterol levels, and polycystic ovarian syndrome in females.
Are there complications associated with diabetes?
Individuals with diabetes face an increased risk of developing several serious health complications. These include cardiovascular diseases (such as heart attacks, stroke, and reduced blood flow to the limbs leading to possible amputations), blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy (manifesting as numbness, tingling, burning, or pins and needles sensations), sexual dysfunction, and frequent infections of the urinary, genital, or respiratory systems. Additionally, diabetes is associated with sleep disturbances, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and a higher incidence of depression and anxiety. Maintaining blood glucose levels, body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol near normal levels is critical in delaying or preventing these complications.
