Hon. Rebecca Miano, EGH, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, expressed her honor in welcoming distinguished leaders, including H.E. President William Ruto, Uganda’s President H.E. Yoweri Museveni, and AUC Chairperson candidate H.E. Raila Odinga, to the fourth Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Siaya County.

The festival, a celebration of the rich heritage of the Luo community, showcased traditional music, dance, storytelling, and exhibitions of art, crafts, and cuisine. Speaking at the event, Miano emphasized the importance of cultural festivals in fostering unity, promoting tourism, and strengthening cross-border ties. “Such festivals remind us of the profound role cultural heritage plays in bringing communities together, fostering understanding, and contributing to our socio-economic development,” she remarked.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has released a statement following a tragic scaffold collapse at a construction site in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. at a project located on 11th Street, off Yusuf Haji Avenue.

According to the NCA, three construction workers fell from the 19th floor, where they were engaged in masonry works. Tragically, one worker was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. At the time of the incident, around 20 workers were present on-site.

The NCA compliance team, in collaboration with the National Police, promptly responded to the scene, cordoning off the site and suspending all construction activities. The project, which had obtained all the necessary construction approvals, is being developed by Mr. Francis Mwangi Maunji. Consultants for the project include Architect Weke S. Omondi, Engineer Alkizim Khalid Omar, and Quantity Surveyor Brian Otieno Oluoch. The contractor is Masha Allah Construction Limited.

Preliminary investigations by the NCA indicate that the workers were operating on a wooden scaffold and a timber platform. The collapse is believed to have been caused by a combination of factors, including poor installation, inadequate maintenance, and significant safety lapses. It was noted that the workers were not equipped with safety harnesses, despite operating at such great heights.

The NCA has emphasized its commitment to ensuring accountability, stating that detailed investigations are ongoing. The Authority assured the public that appropriate legal and administrative action will be taken against those found culpable.

The NCA reiterated its mandate to uphold safety standards and oversee construction activities across the country to prevent such incidents in the future.

She urged the congregation to let go of past hurts, embrace reconciliation, and step into the New Year with clean hearts and renewed minds. “Crossing over to the New Year is not just a change of dates but a transformation of the heart,” she emphasized.

The Apostolic Bishop encouraged believers to start 2025 with unwavering faith and a spirit of gratitude, reminding them that forgiveness is not just an act of obedience but also a gateway to spiritual freedom and growth. As we step into this new year of 2025, I, Bishop David Munyiri Thagana, alongside the entire Glory Outreach Assembly (GOA) family and as the General Secretary of the Federation of Evangelical and Indigenous Christian Churches of Kenya, extend our heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and joyful year ahead.

First and foremost, we give all glory, honor, and thanks to the Almighty God for His unending love, grace, and faithfulness that has carried us through 2024. It is by His hand that we have seen tremendous growth, impactful ministry, and lives transformed for His Kingdom. As the Psalmist says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever” (Psalm 107:1).

I also take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to each one of you—our congregation, ministry partners, and well-wishers—who have faithfully stood with us in prayer, service, and generosity. Tea is one of the world’s most cherished beverages, consumed daily by half the global population. In Kenya, it is much more than a drink—it is a pillar of the economy. Contributing 26% of the country’s annual export earnings, the tea sector provides livelihoods for over seven million people, both directly and indirectly.

Beyond its economic importance, the tea industry holds promise for addressing environmental challenges. Through renewable energy adoption, intercropping, forest restoration, and enhanced fertilizer usage, tea farming is evolving to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The year 2024 was a remarkable period for Kenya’s tea industry, marking 100 years of production. This milestone inspired efforts to prioritize value addition and diversify tea varieties to cater to a dynamic global market. Traditionally known for exporting tea as a raw material, Kenya is now shifting gears to offer value-added products that are more competitive on the international stage.

These efforts have been bolstered by substantial government support. In 2024, KTDA procured and delivered 97,000 metric tonnes of subsidized fertilizer, up from 93,000 metric tonnes in 2023. A Ksh. 2 billion government subsidy reduced the cost of fertilizer to Ksh. 2,500 per 50kg bag, a significant decrease from the market price of Ksh. 3,400. This initiative not only reduced farmers’ costs but also boosted the quality and volume of tea produced.

As 2025 begins, optimism is high among tea farmers. The recent fertilizer suspense refunds issued in December 2024 have further improved their earnings. Coupled with the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the sector, tea production is projected to exceed 600 million kilograms this year.

Kenya’s tea industry is set to maintain its global prominence, driving economic growth while addressing environmental challenges. By investing in innovation, sustainability, and farmer support, the sector is poised for even greater success in the years to come..

PROF CATHERINE GACHUTHA Director of the Kenya Institute of Business and Counselling Studies (KIBCo) and chairperson Kenya Counselling and Psychological Association (KCPA) has strongly condemned the recent surge of explicit caricatures circulating on social media, terming them as blatant sexism and a gross violation of women’s dignity. These doctored images, which exploit the bodies of women without their consent, have sparked outrage among women leaders and activists, who are calling for immediate accountability and public decency.

The illustrations, which have been linked to protests against alleged abductions by state actors, cross the line of respectful dissent by weaponizing women’s bodies to amplify political messages. Prof. Catherine, expressed her outrage, stating:

“These photos bearing half-naked bodies of women, shared without their consent, are not just demeaning but also deeply disrespectful and inexcusable. They perpetuate sexism, harm the dignity of women, and erode societal morals.”

The misuse of female imagery has a broader impact beyond the targeted individuals. These caricatures, often shared indiscriminately, are consumed by children, exposing them to distorted ideas about gender and morality. This lack of control, Prof Catherine argues, exacerbates the social damage caused by such media.

“This is not just an attack on women; it’s an attack on our values as a society,” added Prof. Catherine. “Our children are being subjected to content that glorifies disrespect and misogyny. Women must not always be associated with negativity.”

Prof Catherine has called on social media platforms, regulators, and civil society to take swift action to curb the spread of such content. She also urged leaders to condemn the use of women’s bodies as tools for political messaging and enforce stricter controls to protect the dignity of all individuals online.

Her statement underscores the urgent need for a gender-sensitive approach in addressing these issues. Women are not tools for political vendettas, and we insist that their respect and dignity must remain inviolable.

This episode highlights a disturbing trend of weaponizing sexism under the guise of activism, a move that women leaders vow to resist with unwavering determination.

As we usher in the New Year, Dr. Paul Sharp, the Director of Sharp Education Centre and Junior School in Kayole Corner, Nairobi, and a NEC Member of the Unified APBET Schools Association (UASA-Kenya), has shared his reflections and vision for the country, emphasizing education, leadership, and national cohesion.

Addressing the government, Dr. Sharp called for increased investment in the education sector. He stressed the need for:

Recruitment of more teachers in public schools.

Adequate and timely capitation for learners.

Enhanced support systems for CBC implementation.

He also appealed for the reinstatement of capitation funding for low-cost private schools (APBET), which serve learners in hard-to-reach areas, arguing that these institutions play a critical role in ensuring access to quality education for all.

A Call for Political Maturity

Dr. Sharp urged Kenyan politicians to adopt more constructive approaches to resolving differences, cautioning against confrontational tactics that undermine national unity. He suggested reintroducing the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) policy as a means of fostering dialogue and addressing pressing national issues before the next general elections.

Leadership and Accountability

To the presidency, Dr. Sharp emphasized the importance of genuine dialogue with stakeholders across various sectors to address the challenges facing the nation. He called on the President’s advisors to offer candid and honest feedback to enable informed decision-making.
