Sudan Accuses UAE of Fueling Genocide as Siege of El Fashir Intensifies Khartoum’s envoy urges global action to end atrocities in North Darfur

Sudan has appealed to the international community to intervene urgently to stop what it calls a “genocide” unfolding in El Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, as the war in Sudan nears its second year.
Speaking in Nairobi, Sudan’s Chargé d’Affaires to Kenya, Mohamed Akasha, painted a grim picture of the humanitarian catastrophe, accusing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia of committing war crimes and terrorizing civilians trapped in the besieged city.
«“For nearly two years, the ancient city of El Fashir has endured one of the darkest sieges in modern history,” Akasha said. “The terrorist RSF surrounded the city, bombarding it day and night, cutting off food, medicine, and fuel. More than a million civilians have been imprisoned under siege, starved, and terrorized.”»
Akasha said that after the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) withdrew from El Fashir on October 26, the RSF stormed the city and began mass executions, public hangings, and systematic sexual violence, amounting to genocide.
«“The evidence of genocide is overwhelming. This is not a conflict—it is extermination,” he stressed.»
The Sudanese diplomat accused foreign powers, notably the United Arab Emirates (UAE), of deep involvement in fueling the war by arming and financing the RSF through hired mercenaries.
In a letter submitted to the UN Security Council in September, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Al-Harith Idriss, claimed that the UAE has been recruiting and deploying Colombian mercenaries—retired army officers—under private security firms based in Abu Dhabi.
The letter, seen by Sudanese authorities, detailed that between 350 and 380 mercenaries, operating under the code name “Desert Wolves,” were flown into Sudan through Somalia and Libya to reinforce RSF operations.
It also exposed an extensive network of UAE-chartered smuggling flights, allegedly ferrying weapons, drones, and supplies to RSF-controlled zones. Idriss cited records of 248 flights between November 2024 and February 2025, totaling more than 15,000 flight hours, destined for airstrips in Nyala, El Fashir, and Hamrat al-Sheikh.
According to the Sudanese envoy, the mercenaries have participated in drone strikes, artillery assaults, and urban combat, alongside acts of extrajudicial killings, child soldier recruitment, and the use of prohibited munitions such as white phosphorus.
Akasha called on the United Nations, African Union, and global powers to take decisive measures, including sanctions and arms embargoes, to end foreign interference and bring perpetrators of atrocities to justice.
«“Sudan is bleeding while the world watches,” he said. “If the international community fails to act, El Fashir could become another Srebrenica in the heart of Africa.”»
The Sudanese conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the SAF and the RSF, has displaced millions and plunged the nation into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
