Mike Sonko’s Political Comeback: NEDP Party Gets Green Light

By Judith Mwai

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of his new party, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) handed over the certificate of full registration to Sonko on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, marking a major step in his bid to revive his political career ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sonko, flanked by senior party officials, received the certificate at Lion Place, Nairobi, after NEDP met all requirements under the Political Parties Act. The party’s key officials include Naomi Chebet Nasai and Anthony Manyara as deputy leaders, John Muchai Nyamu as national chairperson, and Benard Kioo Mulwa as secretary general.¹

In his speech, Sonko criticized Chief Justice Martha Koome, accusing her of bias in his impeachment appeal and questioning the Judicial Service Commission’s delay in acting on his petition for her removal. Sonko urged Kenyans to join NEDP, emphasizing economic transformation, development, and improved livelihoods as the party’s core focus.

The ORPP has also invited public feedback on other recently submitted parties, including the People Centred Party (PEC) and the United Super Alliance Party (USAP), with a seven-day window for submissions.
