National Police Service Refutes Allegations of Abductions by Officers

By John Kariuki

Nairobi, December 26, 2024 – The National Police Service (NPS) has categorically denied allegations that its officers are involved in the abduction of individuals in Kenya. In a press statement released by the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja Kirocho, the NPS clarified its role as mandated by the Constitution, emphasizing that the service is tasked with arresting criminal offenders, not abducting individuals.

The statement outlined that all arrests conducted by the police adhere to strict procedural standards as outlined in the Service Standing Orders. Arrests are officially documented in the Occurrence Book, and suspects are subsequently arraigned in court. If an arrest fails to meet procedural requirements, the suspects are released from police custody.

“For avoidance of doubt, the National Police Service is not involved in any abduction, and there is no police station in the country that is holding the reported abductees,” the Inspector General stated.

The NPS further reiterated Kenya’s status as a democratic nation that guarantees freedom of expression. However, the service urged citizens to exercise their freedom responsibly, cautioning against the spread of false, malicious, and unverified information that could damage the reputation of the institution.

“The matter in question is subject to investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and other independent bodies,” the statement read. The NPS also appealed to the public to report any relevant information regarding missing persons to the nearest police station to assist in ongoing investigations.

The Inspector General reaffirmed the service’s commitment to protecting and serving all citizens while urging the public to refrain from actions that could undermine the credibility of law enforcement.

This clarification comes amid rising public concern over cases of disappearances and alleged misconduct by security forces. The NPS reassured the public that it is actively working to uphold the rule of law and its constitutional mandate.

National Construction Authority Issues Statement on Rongo Building Collapse

By John Kariuki

In a tragic incident in Rongo Town, Migori County, a seven-story building under construction collapsed at approximately 4:30 p.m. The collapse resulted in injuries to three individuals—a security guard and two children—who were struck by falling debris. They were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Search and rescue operations are currently underway to ensure that no additional victims are trapped or injured.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has confirmed that the project was registered under registration number 51625315710072. The developer on record is Mr. Daniel Obuya Ooko. The consultants involved include Architect Joseph Ralph Odhiambo (A577), Engineer Joel Kireu Wairua (A2699), and Quantity Surveyor Brian Otieno Oluoch (Q1046). The contractor for the project is Build High Enterprises.

Prior to the collapse, the NCA had suspended construction on the site after a routine quality assurance check raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity. The developer had been directed to provide a structural integrity report before resuming work.

In a statement, Eng. Maurice Akech, Executive Director and Registrar of Contractors, assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the failure. “Any individual found to have acted in contravention of the law or defied lawful directives will face the full force of the law,” Akech stated.

The NCA emphasized its commitment to enforcing construction regulations and ensuring the safety of developments across the country.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to building codes and maintaining rigorous oversight in the construction industry to prevent such tragedies.

By John Kariuki

The President of the Matatu Owners Association (MOA), Albert Karakacha, has expressed his deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of seven individuals in two separate but related road accidents along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Road on Monday morning.

Police reports indicate that the first accident occurred at around 10 a.m. when a trailer traveling from Narok to Mai Mahiu suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The trailer rammed into a Toyota Premio, an ENA Coach bus, and a Narok-Line matatu, forcing the vehicles off the road. Tragically, three of the matatu’s occupants lost their lives at the scene.

As emergency responders and witnesses gathered at the accident site, a second trailer, speeding in the opposite direction toward Narok, collided head-on with a Toyota Prado as it attempted to navigate around the crash site. Two passengers in the Prado died instantly, while a third succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the Narok County Referral Hospital. The trailer also ran over a motorcycle, killing two pillion passengers on the spot.

In his statement, Mr. Karakacha mourned the loss of lives and called for heightened caution and responsible driving, particularly during this festive season when road traffic typically increases.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the need for drivers to exercise extreme caution, maintain responsible driving practices, and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent such devastating accidents,” he said.

The MOA President also urged authorities to ensure that vehicles on the roads are well-maintained and to enforce stricter penalties for reckless driving.

The incident has reignited calls for improved road safety measures on the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu route, a corridor known for frequent accidents.

As families mourn their loved ones, Mr. Karakacha extended his heartfelt condolences, urging all road users to prioritize safety and responsibility to prevent further loss of life.
